St. Jacobs Farmer's Market

After a fire that destroyed the original wood barn that housed the farmer's market a temporary new barn has risen from the ashes. Business has returned at the St. Jacobs Farmer's Market. The construction of a new main building is already under way. One of the things that make this market unique is the number of vendors from the local Mennonite community.

Soccer Dome Construction

The $8.7-million project is a partnership between the City of Pickering and the Pickering Soccer Club. It will be owned by the City and managed by the Club, which is responsible for $4.5 million of the total cost, paying it to the City over the next 15 years. The highest point of the dome is 75 feet (23 metres) above the playing surface, which is almost seven storeys high.

The insulated dome will maintain internal temperatures of 18°C.

The dome is equipped with wind and snow sensors. In high winds, pressure will automatically increase for stabilization. During snow accumulation, sensors will adjust dome pressure and internal
temperatures to allow snow to shed from the fabric.

The dome automatically switches to a natural gas backup inflation pump during power outages.

Saving The Arch

This stone arch is from the former St. Andrew's United Church (built in 1923) on Bloor Street East at Park Road. The City of Toronto purchased the arch when the church was demolished in 1981. The arch was then rebuilt here as a pedestrian gateway, after the intersection of McGill and Yonge Streets was closed.

Hospital Demolition

Women’s College Hospital building, completed in 1935, is currently being torn down on Grenville Street, Toronto. With the recently built first phase of the new Women’s College Hospital facility now completed to the east, this aging hospital structure on the western edge of the property is being cleared to make way for a future second phase of the hospital. There was concern whether the building could be saved or reincorporated into the new hospital, but the aging facility was considered no longer viable in an age where health care has become high tech,
and where programs are changing significantly.

Abandoned - Camp 30 PoW #4

I made a return trip to the former boys school for troubled youth and World War II POW camp for Nazi officers. As vandals continue to do what they do best, the buildings continue to decorate. Throughout the complex there are slogans like this one that present no meaning to me.

Built in 1904 the current police facility, once the Armouries, is now the centre
of police operations. As a heritage building the exterior is virtually unchanged.

Wide Angle Lens

It was two months ago today that I purchased my first wide angle lens. I left the camera store with my new toy mounted on my camera. Wasting no time I began testing it out right away. The above is my first photo and right off the bat I learned that if I point the camera up on a angle there is going to be distortion. In the last month I have rarely taken the lens off the camera.
