Monday Mural - Fire Department

Andy | Monday, April 01, 2013 | Best Blogger Tips

More than one local artist worked on the mural: Pat Johnson, Susan Shurish, Susan Gordon, Rowena Spursrud, Paul Schleusner, Betty Burrellt. Painted on the garage doors of the Port Stanley Fire Hall, this mural is based on a photograph taken of the volunteer team of fire fighters in 1939. I'm linking to Monday Mural.

  2. Nice painted, the volunteer team seems to be all woman, very special for 1939.

    1. I never noticed until you pointed it out the the crew is composed of women. The mural was reproduced from a photo taken in 1939. At that time my country Canada and your country were at war with the Nazis. It was common at that time for women to fill in for the men that enlisted in the armed forces.

  3. Also funny that the picture is going over two doors as one. A very nice painting.

  4. Our city is building a new central firestation since the old one was flooded out in 2008. It will be a retro style firehouse. Thanks for posting.

  5. Very nice Andy! It's good to see the women there - we forget how they took over all the chores while the men were away!

  6. Love it ... the brick column between the two doors makes it seem like the doors are open and we're looking into the fire station; nice 3-d effect.

  7. Your turn to honor the fire fighters! ;) Love the ladies, never thought about the fact that they probably fought the fires during WWII.

  9. I thought my eyes were deceiving me when the fire fighters looked like women. We have the tradition of honoring "Rosie the Riveter" acknowledging that women built the navy ships during the war. This mural is Port Stanley's tip of the hat to the contribution of women during the war. Fantastic. Thanks, Andy, for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
